Professional Teeth Cleanings
Teeth cleaning is a simple and painless process that is performed by a dental hygienist in under an hour. We do everything we can to provide a stress-free environment for this procedure because we understand the apprehension surrounding the process. Biannual cleanings are crucial to ensure the health and longevity of your smile by removing potential tartar and plaque buildup from the surface of your teeth. During your visit, we will also check for any dark spots on your teeth as well as the health of your gums.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings made to protect your teeth from cavity-causing bacteria. Sealants are ideal for children whose back molars have come in and who cannot reach all the nooks and crannies when brushing and flossing. These coatings will provide an extra layer of protection for kids who are still learning to brush properly and keep leftover food particles from getting stuck in the grooves of the back molars.
When the sealant is applied, it helps keep bits of food and bacteria from settling in your teeth and creating cavities. Once a tooth is compromised by drilling into it to fill a cavity, the natural structure will never be the same. Children who get sealants are less likely to develop a cavity and will keep the integrity of their natural tooth longer. These coatings will last for several years but regular maintenance is still required. If a sealant falls out or chips, it can easily be replaced.
Gum Disease Screenings
The process of screening for gum disease is quite simple. We recommend getting your gums screened twice a year as a preventative measure. Screening for gum disease takes place in our office and we start by inspecting your gums for any redness or puffiness. We will also determine if your gums have started to recede and in some cases will take a dental x-ray to view your jaw bone structure underneath your gums. Gum disease screenings are a great test to detect the early stages of gum disease and contribute to early diagnosis which can lead to the possibility of early treatment.
Gum disease will occur when the gums surrounding your teeth become infected. Plaque, a sticky form of bacteria, will develop on the teeth and will form toxins that damage gums. Once infected, they can lead to various health issues such as tender gums, tooth loss, bone deterioration, and bite changes. The best way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene at home and regularly schedule cleaning and gum screening visits.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Just like gum disease screenings, oral cancer screenings are meant to be a precautionary exam for signs of cancer in your mouth. Oral cancer is a type of cancer that can affect the lip, mouth, throat, or cheeks. We will examine your mouth during your appointment and look for abnormal red or white patches, mouth sores, lumps, or bumps in the tissue of your mouth and your neck. We may even rinse your mouth with a blue dye that will stain abnormalities blue and a screening light can be used that will make abnormal tissue appear white.
The screening itself is very simple and will take no more than a few minutes to complete. Identifying oral cancer early on will increase your chances of successful treatment and save you a world of pain. Risk factors for oral cancer include excessive drinking and smoking, excessive sun exposure to your lips, and HPVs. Oral cancer screenings are not diagnostic, just precautionary. It never hurts to check and help put your mind at ease.
